Postgraduate Elite Scholarships for overseas students

The University offers several scholarship programmes for PhD students from outside the European Union.

Elite scholarships are open to all non-EU applicants, although places are limited, and the scheme is very competitive. Candidates must typically have performed in the top few percent at undergraduate level. Applications must be made as soon as possible (by the beginning of January). Please note: this scheme is not running for October 2014 starters.

Li Siguang scholarships are open to Chinese nationals, with four places available in 2014 to study at the University of Birmingham.

University of Birmingham Brazil Scholarships are open to Brazilian citizens and permanent residents. Ten places are available across the University, and we encourage candidates to apply as soon as possible.

We were happy to welcome Bindumalini Gunupudi on one of the Elite Scholarships. She started her PhD on Studies on Linear & Non-Linear behaviour of Electromechanical Resonators with Dr Mark Colclough in October 2010.

Her MSc was obtained from the University of Hyderabad (among the top 40 universities in India), following her BSc from Sri Sathya Sai University. Her MSc dissertation was on "Resonant Modes in a Microwave Dielectric Resonator", and she also completed a Summer Fellowship at the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras, on "Growth and structural characterisation of CuGaTe2". Both of these projects are related to her PhD work.

She was also awarded a Junior Research Fellowship from the Indian CSIR & UGC. She declined this fellowship to take up the Elite Scholarship at Birmingham. Bindu says, 'I am delighted to have the chance to study for a PhD and also teach undergraduates in Birmingham.'
